While the Welfare State once took responsibility for social care, the Church has, in recent years, returned to delivering community services on an unprecedented scale. From food provision and debt advice to mental health support and befriending, churches have played a vital role — especially during COVID-19 — and are now working alongside civic authorities in Movements for Recovery to help communities flourish. The Church’s reach, local presence and long-term commitment make it uniquely placed to serve on the margins of society. Yet alongside this renewed welcome to provide practical care sits a growing discomfort with the Church addressing people’s spirituality. As the Church is celebrated for its service, there is a risk of losing confidence in sharing the faith that motivates it. This resource explores how the Church can continue to serve communities with compassion while remaining open about its Christian identity demonstrating faith through both words and deeds, and articulating what makes its service distinctive.
